This forces an autosave. If that fails, you can go into Online menu and leave GTA Online. It will go into story mode and also force save. Change outfit method does make the game trying to save but it never worked for me. Leaving GTA Online saves money and a few progress but it doesn't save 90% of my progress.

In GTA since armor is just a health pool there is not a lot of variation between how guns deal with armor, more dmg just means more armor knocked off. But if armor worked to reduce damage going through armor would be a bit different as well so certain guns or bullets should deal damage that can ignore armor.
